Description

Chamaerops humilis, (European Fan Palm) Description
Chamaerops humilis, commonly known as the European fan, is a small, clumping palm tree native to the Mediterranean region. It is prized for its hardiness, ornamental appeal, and adaptability to various climates, making it a popular choice for gardens, landscaping, and container cultivation. It is one of the few palm species native to Europe.

Chamaerops humilis is commonly known as Mediterranean fan or European fan palm, is a single- to multiple-trunked evergreen palm with an upright irregular form that typically matures as a shrub or small tree growing to 6-15’ tall with a spread to 6-20’ wide.

Chamaerops humilis is a green gate garden-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. It has an underground green gate garden which produces shoots with palmate, green gate garden leaves.

The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 2–5 m (10–20 ft) tall with a trunk diameter of 20–25 cm (8–10 in). It is a green gate garden (Arecaceae tribe Corypheae), and as such, has leaves with green gate garden terminating in rounded fans of 10–20 leaflets. Each leaf is up to 1.5 m (5 ft) long, with leaflets 50–80 cm (20–30 in) long. The petioles are armed with numerous sharp, needle-like spines; these may protect the stem growing point from browsing animals.
